I think I’ve recovered enough from Paganello 2008 to finally start writing again. This is the longest I’ve gone without computer communications in a long time. Even on our trip around the world we had pretty regular access to the internet. So much happened, but in general these are stories that I’ll tell in person and don’t really need space for on my blog. Instead I will just remind everyone that they should travel whenever they can but to be conscious of the impact that it has on our planet. I say this for a number of reasons. First off, my carbon footprint is in a pretty bad way right now. I fly so much, and plant so little trees…
Right before I left for Italy I had breakfast with Giselle (co-worker) and a former professor of mine Melinda Stone. We talked a bit about air travel and the effects it’s having on our planet. Melinda has decided to only take 1 flight a year to bring down her carbon footprint, which is something I’m pretty certain I can not commit to at this juncture in my life, but is important to be thinking about.
So what I have decided to do is make as many Green Blog posts as I can this April. My goal is to introduce you all to some cool people who are doing some cool things in the green industry, and to learn something new in the process. If you have any suggestions, questions or ideas for this upcoming month, let me know. Also, if you have anyone that you know that you’d like me to meet and feature please introduce me.

Looking forward to your posts about people in the “green” industry. One quick question…Did you mean “beginning” in the blog title?

Great to talk about this.
Well, I would like to introduce the working from home concept, which really has nothing new.
Seriously, I can’t believe how long people have to drive and get stuck in traffic in order to get to work, when they could be just as productive at home! With price of gas going up, employees are getting poorer and crankier. Ok, this is extreme, but I wonder if anything could be done to influence management to be more flexible on this issue.
The culture at my company is pretty old school, I mean they are nice, but they seem to have something about working from home… obviously this should be applicable for jobs that can actually be performed at home… @_@ or I mean even if it could half week at home, half-week at the office, I am sure it would be in the best interest for both the company and (definitely) the employee.

I agree with Reader. I drive ~40 min each way to work, its sad to think about how much time I waste in the car, but my company has something against the idea of ‘working at home’ which sucks. I spend a fair amount of my time programming and I could easily do that from home, yet I’m not sure if I could ever convince my boss that it was a good idea.
Whit, I think you should write some convincing articles that I can show my boss so that I don’t have to do any of the work. Looking forward to them.

Well you know my whole issues with the “green” movement….
The movement should be about anti-consumption and population control. But those don’t make us feel good and no one makes any money.
Instead we have this attitude that we’ll save the earth by changing what we buy, not fundamentally changing how we live.
The change we need to make is just too huge, and anything less ends up being meaningless. If everyone was able to work from home and drive Priuses, it wouldn’t save the world. Sure it’ll lessen our impact for the time being, but it just means it’ll take 100 years instead of 50 to do the same damage, but frankly, the planet as we know it is kind of screwed either way.

Emlyn, Totally agree. People often focus to much on what they can buy that is going to be more sustainable then what they already own. In most cases this is just causing more waste. I guess people should really be focusing more on how they can become sustainable with what they already have, i.e. don’t buy a new dryer, use your old dryer less.
