So, this story begins a few nights ago with meeting Karim T. Kawar. Over the course of the last few days, I bumped into him a few times and he recognized me as Loic’s camera guy. He was always nice, and always had a smile for me. Today, he contact Loic looking for some help filming a friend of his. This friend is Arthur Mutambara, the president of the Movement for Democratic Change of Zimbabwe, potentially the next president of Zimbabwe.
I don’t know the details but this is my understanding. Zimbabwe has something of a dictatorship right now, and many people are silenced because of it. Zimbabwe sounds like it’s in a pretty bad way, with an average life expectancy of 35 years, and 2000 people dying per week from HIV AIDS mixed with malnutrition (if I’m remembering my facts correctly).
The current president of Zimbabwe just reset the presidential elections for March 29th, while they are currently working on a new constitution. Anyone running for president has to be on the ballot by February 9th making it nearly impossible for anyone to run, and placing the next president in office before the new constitution is written. Again, my understanding is that Mutambara was invited to Davos because of his forward thinking and desire to bring Zimbabwe out of the ruins, where as the current president is not allowed to come to Davos because he is considered a dictator.
This brings me to my part. Karim asks Loic if I could film Mutambara telling this story on video, and if I will get it up on YouTube. In the meantime, a journalist for The New York Times and another from the Economist are there helping with the whole process. Neither want to be named or on video but are both great people. We take five or six takes and Mutambara is happy with what he has said.
Next, A YouTube representative joins the conversation and helps with the whole process. I won’t get into the details after this because I don’t know how much anyone reading this wants to know, or how much the people here want me to say. Regardless, my point is that I potentially just shot a video with the next president of Zimbabwe, journalists from The New York Times and the Economist and a representative from YouTube. I hope this little story helps explain what coming to Davos for the World Economic Forum is like.

Please can I have more details about this video if you don’t mind. And why did the journalists from the NYT and CNN not want to be included on the video?

The journalists wanted to help as individuals but did not want there publications to be associated with the video. What more do you want in details of the video, I’d be glad to answer what I think is appropriate.
